The Creators With Rules Are Winning
The more complicated the internet gets, the more I trust people with simple rules.
Not simplistic thinking. Simple operating rules.
The creator who says, I only write about three things. The filmmaker who says, I publish once a week, no matter what. The writer who refuses to chase every platform and just keeps showing up in the same place with the same level of care.
I don't think that's accidental. I think it's one of the clearest competitive advantages emerging right now.
We're surrounded by advice that sounds sophisticated: be omnichannel, repurpose aggressively, test formats constantly, follow the audience everywhere, optimize distribution, diversify revenue, tailor content to context, build a flywheel, build a funnel, build a system for the system supporting the other system.
Some of that is useful. A lot of it is just elaborate panic.
Because underneath all the complexity, the people doing work that actually feels coherent usually have an absurdly simple internal logic. A few rules. A few boundaries. A few decisions they've already made, so they don't have to keep remaking them every day.
That's what I think most people misunderstand about consistency.
They treat it like a personality trait. Like some people are just naturally disciplined and everyone else is chaotic.
I don't buy that.
Consistency is often what happens when you reduce the number of decisions required to stay yourself.
A Rule Is Sometimes Just Pre-Decided Identity
When someone says, "I post every Tuesday," that sounds tactical.
Sometimes it's deeper than that.
What they're really saying is: I don't renegotiate my relationship to the work every morning.
That matters more than people realize.
A lot of inconsistency isn't laziness. It's ongoing identity drift. It's waking up each day and asking fresh existential questions:
- What should I make?
- Where should I publish it?
- What if this format is wrong now?
- What if the audience wants something else?
- What if I should pivot?
If you have to solve all of that before you make anything, of course you won't be consistent. You've turned creation into a daily referendum.
Rules short-circuit that.
Not all rules are good, obviously. Some are inherited and dead. Some are fear dressed up as structure. But the right rules create relief. They narrow the field enough that your energy can go into the work instead of into perpetual self-reinvention.
That's why the best creators often look less "free" from the outside than everyone assumes. They are free inside a structure they chose on purpose.
Sophistication Is Overrated When It Fragments You
I keep seeing creators mistake flexibility for strength.
Be adaptable. Be responsive. Be everywhere. Be fluid. Don't get boxed in.
Fine. Up to a point.
But if your strategy changes every time the internet twitches, you are not adaptive. You are porous.
And porous people get shaped by whatever has the strongest pull that week.
One of the quiet costs of modern creator culture is that it encourages people to stay strategically unfinished. Always available for a pivot. Always one trend away from a new identity. Always slightly detached from their own center in case the data suggests a better option.
That can produce motion. It does not always produce trust.
Trust usually comes from pattern recognition.
People return when they know what kind of attention you pay, what kind of judgment you have, what kinds of questions you can't stop asking. And that doesn't emerge from infinite flexibility. It emerges from repeated choices that start to form a shape.
In other words: rules.
The Point Isn't Restriction. It's Recognition.
The creators I remember rarely feel random.
They feel governed.
Not in a stiff way. In a recognizable way.
You can sense the invisible framework underneath the work. The topics they keep orbiting. The standards they won't betray. The formats they trust. The things they ignore on purpose.
That recognizability is powerful because it lowers the audience's cognitive load too.
I know what drawer in my brain to open for you.
I know why I come to you.
I know what kind of signal you'll produce when everything else is noisy.
And maybe that's the real function of self-imposed constraint now. Not just helping the creator make better decisions, but helping the audience build a durable relationship to the work.
Make Fewer Rules. Follow Them Longer.
If I were giving advice here—and I guess I am—it would be this:
Stop trying to build an infinitely responsive creative system.
Build a few rules you can still respect six months from now.
Maybe it's a publishing cadence. Maybe it's a set of themes. Maybe it's a platform boundary. Maybe it's a tone standard. Maybe it's a rule about what you do not optimize for.
Whatever it is, make it simple enough to survive your moods.
Because moods are real. Doubt is real. Internet weather is real. The temptation to start over is very real.
Rules aren't glamorous, but they're incredibly good at carrying you across periods where motivation disappears.
And I think that's why they're becoming more valuable, not less.
In a culture obsessed with optionality, the ability to commit to a few clear constraints is starting to look like sanity.
Maybe even taste.
Definitely power.
The creators with rules are winning because they spend less time deciding who to be.
They already decided.
And now they get to make things.
